Black Bull Turbo Yeast and Barrel Aging
Turbo yeast with excellent temperature tolerance and clean fermentation capabilities that can produce up to 23% alcohol in just 6-7 days. When adding it to sugar solution, combine one sachet of Black Bull Turbo Carbon and one of Turbo Clear (fermentation absorbent). These will eliminate impurities during fermentation.
Barrel aging is an age-old technique utilized by brewers to add depth of flavor. Beer aged this way usually involves being placed into spirit barrels such as whiskey or rum barrels that had previously aged another spirit; this allows it to gain different flavors while at the same time increasing exposure to oxygen, potentially creating an unpleasant stale, cardboardy taste in its wake.
Given how barrel aging works, it is crucial that beers with robust flavor profiles can withstand its intensity. Stout is the preferred style for barrel aging but other big boozy styles like Barleywine and Scotch Ale also work well. India Pale Ales do not lend themselves well due to the hop character degrading over time when exposed to oxygen; this often results in an off-flavor that people find unpalatable. Furthermore, wood is porous enough to allow bacteria and wild yeasts into your beer potentially leading to spoilage!
